Wealth Strategies: 2026 Alberta Budget Highlights

Milestone Wealth Management Ltd. - Mar 17, 2026

On February 26, 2026, Alberta’s Minister of Finance, Nate Horner, tabled the provincial budget titled Focused on What Matters. The budget emphasizes targeted investments in healthcare, education, and economic development while maintaining a disciplined fiscal approach. From a tax perspective, no changes were announced to Alberta’s personal or corporate income tax rates. However, several policy changes and spending initiatives may affect Albertans in the coming years.

Major Spending Priorities

Budget 2026 includes significant investments in core public services. Healthcare spending totals $34.4 billion, including new funding aimed at increasing surgical capacity, expanding cancer care resources, improving ambulance deployment, and strengthening mental health and addiction services.

Education funding also increases to support Alberta’s growing population. The budget allocates $722 million in new funding for K–12 education, including resources for hiring additional teachers and education assistants, improving classroom conditions, and expanding school infrastructure.

The province also continues to invest in workforce development, post-secondary education, and major infrastructure projects, including transit expansion in Alberta’s largest metropolitan centres.

Key Tax Measures

While overall tax rates remain unchanged, the budget introduces several targeted tax and policy measures:

Alberta Caregiver Credit
Beginning in the 2027 tax year, the province will introduce a new non-refundable Alberta Caregiver Credit, replacing the existing caregiver and infirm dependent credits. The new credit will apply to individuals caring for an eligible adult dependent with a mental or physical infirmity and will align more closely with the federal Canada Caregiver Credit.

Vehicle Rental Tax
Starting January 1, 2027, a new 6% tax on passenger vehicle rentals will apply to vehicles designed to transport eight or fewer passengers. Certain vehicles, including cargo vans and long-term leases, will be excluded.

Tourism Levy Increase
Effective April 1, 2026, the tourism levy on short-term accommodation will increase from 4% to 6%.

Changes Affecting Seniors

Budget 2026 also includes adjustments to programs supporting seniors. Income thresholds for the Alberta Seniors Benefit and related assistance programs will be reduced by approximately 9% beginning July 1, 2026, which may affect eligibility for some seniors currently receiving support.
