Wealth Strategies: Thinking About Learning in Retirement? U Calgary Might Have a Free Option

Milestone Wealth Management Ltd. - Aug 13, 2025

For many retirees, the idea of taking a university class just for the enjoyment of learning is an appealing one. But the thought of paying tuition again? Not so much. The good news is that if you are 65 or older and live in Alberta, the University of Calgary offers a tuition waiver for senior citizens enrolling in undergraduate courses.

This waiver applies to standard bachelor-level classes, the kind you would take right out of high school, in areas like arts, science, or business. It does not include professional programs such as law or Medicine. However, it is a great opportunity to explore a topic you have always been curious about or revisit something you enjoyed years ago.

You will still need to cover smaller fees, including the application fee and course materials, but the bulk of the tuition is covered. Once you are registered, the waiver is applied automatically. No extra forms or steps are needed.

For retirees who value staying sharp, engaged, and curious, it is definitely worth a look. Whether it is philosophy, history, or even an intro to economics, there is something empowering about being back in the classroom, especially when it is free.
